Choosing the Right Step Down Voltage Converter for Your Imported Appliance
Power (Watts) = Current (Amperes) × Voltage
Before purchasing, take a moment to check these simple tips so you order the right model for your appliance the first time.
1. What size converter do you need? Start with the total power draw in watts shown on your 110V–120V US or 100V Japanese appliance. Most appliances display three figures along the lines of: "Input 120V 60Hz and either xx Amps or xx Watts." As long as you have any two of those values, you can work out the third using the formula above.
2. Short-term use or running all day? Every transformer in the OrderHuge x OHuge® ST range carries two power ratings. The first rating applies to use of one hour or less; the second applies to continuous use over an hour. These safety parameters keep the converter running cool — important in Australian summer heat — and ensure long-term reliability. Many Aussie households place converters behind appliances, inside cupboards or under benchtops, sometimes restricting airflow. Always leave adequate ventilation around the unit to prevent overheating, especially during warmer months.
Example: If your appliance is rated 120V 60Hz at 6.15A, the maximum current draw is 120 × 6.15 = 738W. The ST-1000 is the correct match for short use; step up to the ST-1500 or STIS-1000TP for continuous operation.
3. Does it have a motor, pump, heating element or compressor? Appliances with any of these components — fridges, vacuums, espresso machines, power tools, washing machines — pull a large surge of current at start-up. As a rule of thumb, select a transformer rated 3 to 6 times the appliance's stated power draw. If you're unsure, contact OrderHuge Live Support and we'll recommend the right model based on your appliance and how you plan to use it.
4. Two-pin or three-pin plug? All OrderHuge x OHuge® ST Series Step Down Converters feature universal sockets that accept all three common overseas plug styles: two flat pins, two pins with one thicker (keyed), and three pins (two flat with one round earth). No adapters needed.
5. Why won't my appliance plug in easily? All OrderHuge ST Series converters are built with high-quality pressed metal pin sockets. On first use you may need a small amount of firm pressure to insert your plug — this is completely normal and ensures a tight, long-lasting electrical connection that won't loosen over time.
6. What about the frequency difference — 60Hz vs Australia's 50Hz? Australia runs on 50Hz, while the US, Canada and Japan use 60Hz. Here's what that means for your appliance:
- Motorised appliances typically run 8–10% slower. For fridges, simply adjust the thermostat one setting cooler.
- Speed-controlled items like sewing machines and most turntables are largely unaffected. Some turntables with digital speed controllers may behave differently.
- Home AV receivers are mostly unaffected, although some chipsets controlling the video signal can struggle to sync with your Australian TV — Onkyo AV receivers are one example.
- Game consoles vary widely. Some models work fine with a converter, others don't. Get in touch with OrderHuge support for model-specific guidance before purchase.
- KitchenAid mixers — for KSM 150 Series mixers (the standard range), the ST-500 is the correct choice. For the KitchenAid Pro range, the ST-1000 is recommended.
